Gutter Styles & Materials

When it comes to choosing gutters, there are many different styles, shapes, and materials to choose from. The style of gutter that is right for your property depends on the climate where you live and the look you’d like your property to have. Learning more about each style will make your decision easier and ensure you have the gutter system that best fits your property’s needs.

Gutter Shapes & Styles

Half-Round Gutters

Half-round gutters are shaped like a tube cut in half. They are great for rainy climates because they carry water well. They are also easy to clean because of their shape. However, because they are so open, they do catch a lot of debris. They either need to be cleaned frequently or gutter guards should be installed. Their rounded edges also mean that they cannot just be nailed into the fascia board. Rather, they need brackets to keep them secure. These gutters are a little more high-maintenance than some other types but a great option for people who want an easy clean or live in very rainy areas.

K Style Rain Gutters

K-style gutters are the most common type of gutters you see on a home. They have a flat back and bottom and the outer side comes out at an angle. The outer side also looks like crown molding, so it’s a great decorative option that is also functional. K-style gutters are easy to install and are durable. These gutters can also carry more water than the half round gutters, but their design makes them more difficult to clean and they can clog easily. That being said, they are another great option for rainy climates.

Gutters Down-Spouts

Gutter down-spouts are part of every gutter system. They are at the bottom of the gutter system, where the water from the roof is sent. Downspouts should discharge away from your home to help avoid foundational damage. A gutter system will have more than one downspout - in fact, a good gutter system should have one for every 35 linear feet of gutter. Otherwise, it can become overwhelmed and not drain quickly enough.

Custom-built Fascia Gutters

A custom-built fascia gutter is the sleekest and most contemporary-looking gutter style. Unlike other gutter styles that come in sections, custom fascia gutters are seamless. This means that they are not as prone to leaks and rust, which can reduce the amount of maintenance they’ll need over time. However, they are the most expensive option as they must be installed by professionals.

Siding Types & Materials

Aluminum Gutters

Aluminum is the most common material for gutters. It is the cheapest option and comes in varying levels of thickness. Most home improvement stores sell sections of aluminum gutters, so they are great for a do-it-yourself repair job. They are also rust and weather proof, which makes them great for most climates. However, they can dent and bend easily, especially in areas with high rain or snowfall. The average cost for an aluminum gutter is based on linear footage and varies significantly by region.

Vinyl Gutters

If heavy storms are a regular occurrence where you live, vinyl gutters may be your best option. Vinyl is also a good option for people who want to install gutters on their own, because vinyl gutters are lightweight and resistant to bending and denting. They also price in as one of the most affordable options at an average of $3 to $5 per linear foot. While vinyl gutters will never rust, they are known to crack. Vinyl gutters are not great for climates with extreme heat or freezing weather.

Copper Gutters

Copper gutters are the most beautiful option for gutters. They are also resistant to mold, rust, and mildew. Copper gutters hold up well in all weather and temperature conditions, which means they have much lower maintenance requirements. However, they are one of the most expensive options. Copper gutters typically cost between $25 and $30 per linear foot.

Stainless Steel Gutters

Stainless steel gutters are one of the most durable options available. They don’t rust and stay strong for decades. Stainless steel gutters are relatively low maintenance and work in all types of weather. Stainless steel gutters can cost upwards of $20 per linear foot.
