A Token of Gratitude: Storm Guard Gifts a Wisconsin Veteran a New Roof

In a heartwarming act of kindness and support, Storm Guard Roofing and Construction and local community partners gave Vietnam veteran couple Thomas and Bonnie Biege a brand-new roof. 

The couple has been married for 56 years and has lived in their Wisconsin Dells home for almost 30 years. After serving four years in the Vietnam War, Thomas went on to become the Wisconsin Sheriff for 45 years. Then, he served at a Baraboo hospital, showing his unwavering dedication to service, the community, and our country. 

Veterans still receive limited resources from the Veterans Association, especially in housing. About 36% of Wisconsin veterans have served in the Vietnam War, Thomas included, with almost 7% of them living in poverty.

The Unseen Struggles of Our Veterans

Veterans like Thomas face emotional and financial challenges that feel insurmountable. Many veterans feel they are underappreciated and isolated, coupled with the challenges of transitioning back into civilian life. 

According to the Wounded Warrior Project, 64% of disabled veterans reported having trouble making ends meet at some point. Most of them cite inflation as the primary contributor to their hardships. Another survey by the Military Family Advisory Network echoes the same issue, revealing almost 38% of veterans live in poverty and lack emergency savings.

The emotional toll that veterans go through makes matters worse. Their worrying about basic needs can lead to heightened levels of anxiety and depression. Veterans experiencing financial difficulties are more likely to report mental health issues such as PTSD and depression.

These emotional and financial challenges create a cycle that can be difficult to break, leaving veterans feeling unsupported. To top it all off, many are unaware of the veteran benefits or find the application processes daunting and complicated.

Storm Guard’s Contribution to Uplifting Veterans in Need

At the heart of Storm Guard’s mission lies a dedication to providing peace of mind, shown through our recent project with Thomas and Bonnie in collaboration with local partners. Through our roofing and construction expertise, we helped ensure that those who have served the country can enjoy safe and comfortable homes.

The Dells area veteran couple received a new roof, an essential home improvement for protecting their residence and sense of security. The project’s success wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Owens Corning and Habitat for Humanity. 

These partnerships show how teamwork can create meaningful change in our dear veterans’ lives. When we come together, we can create lasting change. Many veterans face significant financial strain and feelings of underappreciation. We can all help improve their quality of life by affirming, valuing, and honoring their sacrifice and excellent service to this country.
